Harp on "Can You Feel It"
Something psychedelic this way comes: On Friday March 30 - that's TODAY, gentle HARP readers - Yahoo! Music will premiere the video for "Can You Feel It?" the opening track off of the new Apples In Stereo album New Magnetic Wonder.
The video, the second pulled from Apples in Stereo's first release in five years, was directed by Nol Honig (video credits include Moby, Guided by Voices). Using only a digital still camera and a scanner, Honig created a 3D circle of still shots taken of lead singer Robert Schneider, then animated his movements using stop-motion animation. "My inspiration was to make something that looked old and new at the same time, since that is how The Apples In Stereo sound to me," Honig notes. "'Can You Feel It?' has a 'modern retro' sound, with influences from pop music of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, but is, at the same time, very 2007 in the way that it is put together. This was essentially my blueprint for the video: to combine and collage visual references from the past in a fresh, 3-D way. Since the lyrics are about 'turning up the stereo,' I was drawn to images of people and their home stereo systems from these decades. I love the look of the old-school Hi-Fi stereos, so I created a world in that style." Sounds like quite a trip. New Magnetic Wonder has received rave critical attention for its sunny brand of indie-power pop. Last December, Schneider appeared on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report as the opening act to Stephen Colbert's guitar Shred Off with Chris Funk of The Decemberists. Refer, if you will, to the January HARP for an Apples feature as well as a review of the album. |
