With their Q Division release, Roll with You, Eli "Paperboy" Reed and his Booker T. and the MGs meets the Dap-Kings band, the True Loves, have once again proved what Daptone has been saying for years: Soul music is not dead and the sounds of Muscle Shoals and Stax have never really left. Reed doesn't channel the cries and exuberance of Otis (listen to the phenomenal "It's Easier"); he actually delivers the grit himself. This is no imitator; this is a true appreciator and student of Southern soul. This is the kind of shit Tom Dowd used to record. And guess what? Mark Ronson was not involved.
