This Paperboy Has Soul

It may have been released just a few weeks ago, but Roll with You, the new album from Boston's Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves, sounds like a musical time capsule straight from the 1960s.

A collection of original songs deeply rooted in the South, Roll with You is a perfect blend of blues, soul and gospel music. And while the hard-hitting three-piece horn section smokes, it's Reed's own signature croons and wails -- landing somewhere between Otis Redding and James Brown -- that dominate the songs.

More than just impressive on wax, Reed & the True Loves are well-known for their sweat-soaked live performances. They'll give a hundred or so lucky residents north of Boston a chance to witness this magic firsthand tomorrow night when they play their first concert at the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport.

Born and raised in Brookline, Reed, 24, got his first exposure to the sound he now recreates through his father's extensive record collection. After teaching himself guitar, piano, and harmonica, Reed decided at age 18 to get his soul education firsthand by spending a year in Clarksdale, Miss. His memorable experience there included live performances at local clubs, lessons from blues legend Sam Carr and the coining of his nickname "Paperboy" because of the scally cap he was known for wearing at the time.
